Method of Participation

The California Department of Developmental Services, in conjunction with the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, now offers CME/CE credit for physicians and other healthcare providers for reading the educational materials available on DDHealthInfo.org.


To earn CME/CE credit for participation, please register, select and review a topic, complete a brief post-test and evaluation, and claim your certificate. The estimated time to complete each topic is 30 minutes, and a certificate for 0.5 credits will be available upon completion.

Course Description

Approximately 4.5 million individuals in the United States have a developmental disability (1). Many persons with developmental disabilities have additional healthcare needs as a result of their condition and may be at higher risk for associated illnesses or related medical and non-medical issues. This website is designed to assist physicians and other healthcare providers in caring for persons with developmental disabilities.

The primary goal of this website is to improve the health of persons with developmental disabilities in California. To this end, the website is designed to assist physicians and other healthcare providers in caring for persons with developmental disabilities. It is also designed to support consumers with developmental disabilities and their families in making informed health care decisions. The information in this site includes medical care information for specific syndromes and related issues, health provider educational opportunities, speaking opportunities, publications, and links to selected websites. This website provides critical information not otherwise readily accessible in one location.

Accreditation Statement

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and the California Department of Developmental Services.  The University of California, San Diego School of Medicine is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

AMA: The University of California, San Diego School of Medicine designates each of these educational activities for a maximum of 0.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.  Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

BRN: Nurses may claim credit for activities approved for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ in most states, for up to 50% of the nursing requirement for recertification. Each of these educational activities is designated for 0.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ (Provider # CME Category 1).

BBS: Course meets the qualifications for up to 0.5 hours of continuing education per activity for MFTs and/or LCSWs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (UCSD Provider Number PCE 683).

AAFP: This activity has been reviewed and is acceptable for up to 15.5 Prescibed credits by the American Academy of Family Physicians. Each individual article is approved for up to 0.5 Prescribed credits.

Balance and Objectivity of Content

The University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, Continuing Medical Education (UCSD CME) requires that the content of CME activities and related materials provide balance, independence, objectivity, and scientific rigor. Planning must be free of the influence or control of a commercial entity and promote improvements or quality in health care. All recommendations in CME activities involving clinical medicine must be based on evidence accepted within the medical profession. All scientific research used to support patient care recommendations must conform to generally accepted standards of experimental design, data collection, and analysis.

Cultural and Linguistic Competency

This activity is in compliance with California Assembly Bill 1195 which requires continuing medical education activities with patient care components to include curriculum in the subjects of cultural and linguistic competency. Cultural competency is defined as a set of integrated attitudes, knowledge, and skills that enables health care professionals or organizations to care effectively for patients from diverse cultures, groups, and communities. Linguistic competency is defined as the ability of a physician or surgeon to provide patients who do not speak English or who have limited ability to speak English, direct communication in the patient’s primary language. Cultural and linguistic competency was incorporated into the planning of this activity.
